Nun killed, US ambassador to Malta, priest injured in L.A. accident

CALABASAS, Calif. (CNS) -- A memorial Mass was held Sept. 1 for Sister Mary Campbell, who was killed Aug. 25 in a car crash that also severely injured the retired pastor of a Malibu parish and left the driver, Douglas Kmiec, U.S. ambassador to Malta, with serious injuries. Sister Mary, 74, was killed instantly in the one-vehicle accident on Mulholland Drive. A Sister of St. Louis for 52 years, she had been involved in Our Lady of Malibu School for more than 25 years as principal, teacher and volunteer, and had been in pastoral ministry at the parish since 2003. Msgr. John Sheridan, 94, was being treated at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, where he had emergency surgery shortly after arrival. He has been a priest of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles since 1943 and retired in 1990 after 25 years as pastor of Our Lady of Malibu Parish. The Tidings, newspaper of the Los Angeles Archdiocese, reported that Msgr. Sheridan was listed in critical but stable condition Aug. 31, following surgery to stop internal bleeding; he also suffered broken ribs. Kmiec, who suffered multiple fractures, was reported to be "up and walking," but no date for his release from the hospital had been scheduled. In an e-mail note sent to a group of people in the archdiocese, Cardinal Roger M. Mahony said Aug. 31 that he had visited Msgr. Sheridan in the hospital, where he was being weaned off a ventilator. "That is a good sign," the cardinal wrote. "His ability to breathe on his own is key to more progress with his healing. Doug Kmiec is also continuing to make progress in his healing and recovery, thanks be to God."
