Jesus' centurion embodies model of adoration, says bishop at congress
Published:
QUEBEC CITY (CNS) -- The centurion who guarded Jesus from his arrest to his death is a model of adoration, a Philippine bishop said at the 49th International Eucharistic Congress. "Seeing Jesus betrayed, arrested, accused, humiliated, stripped and brutally nailed to the cross, he surprisingly concluded, 'This man is innocent; truly this is the Son of God,'" Bishop Luis Tagle of Imus told more than 12,000 pilgrims June 19 at Quebec's hockey arena. "We learn from the centurion's adoration of Jesus to keep watch over him, to behold him, to contemplate him," he said. "At first the centurion spent hours watching over Jesus out of duty but ended up contemplating him in truth."
