Catholic leader criticizes N.Y. governor's action on same-sex unions
Published: 2008-05-30
ALBANY, N.Y. (CNS) -- New York Gov. David A. Paterson's directive requiring all state agencies to recognize same-sex marriages performed in other states and countries represents "an unwelcome bypassing of the state Legislature" on the issue, according to the executive director of the New York State Catholic Conference. "Unfortunately, this unilateral move without legislative input is not in keeping with Mr. Paterson's promises upon taking office of a collaborative and bipartisan governing style," said the official, Richard E. Barnes, in a May 29 statement. The conference, based in Albany, represents the state's Catholic bishops on public policy matters. In a directive dated May 14 but not widely publicized until two weeks later, David Nocenti, legal counsel to the governor, told state agencies that same-sex couples married elsewhere "should be afforded the same recognition as any other legally performed union." Nocenti said the agencies should review all rules and regulations and report to him by June 30 on any conflicts with recognition of same-sex marriage.
