
Seven chosen for Eileen Egan journalism awards

TORONTO (CNS) -- Seven journalists have been chosen the winners of the Eileen Egan Award for journalistic excellence. All winners will receive a trophy and an all-expenses-paid trip to visit the Middle East to see Catholic Relief Services-supported programs that aid Iraqi refugees. CRS, the U.S. bishops' overseas relief and development agency and sponsor of the awards, announced the winners May 29 at the Catholic Media Convention in Toronto. The seven winners are: Amanda Finnegan and Meghan Hurley of The Loquitur, the student newspaper of Cabrini College in Radnor, Pa.; Barbara Fraser of the National Catholic Reporter, based in Kansas City, Mo. (she is also a correspondent for Catholic News Service and her "Latin America Letter" is published monthly by CNS); Chris Herlinger, a photographer for the National Catholic Reporter; Marylynn G. Hewitt, managing editor of The Michigan Catholic, newspaper of the Archdiocese of Detroit; Paul Jeffrey, a CNS international correspondent; and J.D. Long-Garcia, managing editor of The Catholic Sun, newspaper of the Diocese of Phoenix.
