Kenyan bishops urge Cabinet to make resettlement a priority

NAIROBI, Kenya (CNS) -- Kenya's Catholic bishops want the new federal Cabinet to prioritize the resettling of Kenyans displaced by postelection violence. "The new Cabinet should ensure the (internally displaced people) of their security and resettling," said the bishops in a two-page statement released April 15. The statement was signed by Nairobi Cardinal John Njue on behalf of all the bishops. President Mwai Kibaki has said the new government would make the resettlement a priority. The bishops also urged the newly formed Cabinet -- 42 ministers and 52 assistant ministers -- to comprehensively address the land issue. The bishops' seven-point statement also called upon all members of the parliament to ensure that legislation and new laws helped make truth, justice and peace prevalent in the nation. The bishops said legislators should lead by example in the process of forgiveness, reconciliation and the acceptance of one another.
