HONOLULU (CNS) -- The U.S. government's Corporation for National and Community Service named Chaminade University, a Marianist-run university in Honolulu, as a recipient of its Presidential Award for Service to Youth From Disadvantaged Circumstances in the federal agency's 2007 President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. The Catholic university was one of only three colleges and universities nationwide named to receive the award for achievements during the 2006-07 academic year. The other two were Syracuse University in New York and the University of Redlands in Redlands, Calif. The award, which was a special focus area of this year's honor roll, was presented during the American Council on Education's annual conference in San Diego Feb. 11. Criteria used to judge the winners included the scope and innovativeness of service projects, the percentage of student participation in service activities, incentives for service and the extent to which the school offers academic service-learning courses.
