LOUISVILLE, Ky. (CNS) -- Retired Bishop Paul M. Boyle, who was the apostolic vicar of Mandeville, Jamaica, from 1991 to 1997, then its bishop from 1997 until his retirement in 2004, died in Louisville Jan. 10 from complications following hip surgery. He was 81. A Detroit native and former superior general of the Passionists, he had lived in his order's community in Louisville since his retirement. A funeral Mass was to be celebrated Jan. 16 at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Detroit, followed by burial in the Passionists' cemetery there. Besides serving his order on the provincial and congregational levels and ministering to Catholics in Jamaica, he also had taught canon law. In retirement he pursued a special ministry as a preacher of appeals for Food for the Poor, a Christian relief organization in Deerfield Beach, Fla., that works to alleviate poverty in the Caribbean.
