
Pope names Alabama priest archbishop, nuncio to Bangladesh

VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- Pope Benedict XVI has named Msgr. Joseph Marino, a priest of the Diocese of Birmingham, Ala., to be an archbishop and the new nuncio to Bangladesh. Archbishop-designate Marino, who will celebrate his 55th birthday Jan. 23, was assigned to the Vatican Embassy to Great Britain at the time of his Jan. 12 appointment. Born in Birmingham in 1953, he was ordained to the priesthood Aug. 25, 1979. He studied at the Vatican's diplomatic academy, earned a degree in canon law and joined the diplomatic service in 1988. His postings have included the Vatican embassies in the Philippines, Uruguay and Nigeria and in the Vatican Secretariat of State.
