
Martin McLaughlin, bishops' consultant on poverty, hunger, dies at 89

ARLINGTON, Va. (CNS) -- A funeral Mass was celebrated Dec. 1 at St. Charles Borromeo Church in Arlington for Martin McLaughlin, whose longtime advocacy for the poor and hungry included work as a consultant to the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. McLaughlin, 89, died of congestive heart failure Nov. 27 at Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington. In the 1980s and 1990s, McLaughlin was a consultant on food and international economic issues in the bishops' Office of International Justice and Peace. His book, "World Food Security: A Catholic View of Food Policy in the Millennium," was published in 2002, when he was 84. John Carr, the U.S. bishops' secretary for social development and world peace, said McLaughlin "worked for poor and hungry people for decades in a variety of roles and organizations" and, at the bishops' conference, "carried forward essential analysis and advocacy on global poverty, hunger and development."
