Christophers announce winners in video contest for college students

NEW YORK (CNS) -- Sean Brown, a television and radio major at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, won the top prize of $3,000 for his film, "Bright Idea," in the Christophers' 20th annual video contest for college students. The film focuses on Kenny Luna, a middle-school science teacher in New York's Long Island who is trying to raise awareness and curb the effects of global warming by distributing energy-efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs to every student in the U.S. Dennis Heaney, president of the Christophers, said Brown's film "illustrates the importance of constructive action and personal responsibility in finding solutions to problems facing our world, rather than just complaining, which wastes time and energy -- in this case, literally." Second place and $2,000 went to John Lombardi, a business major at Manhattan College in Riverdale, N.Y., for "The Inward Warrior," a profile of a Utah man working to improve the lives of those suffering serious spinal-cord injuries. Jennava Laska, a film major at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, Calif., won the $1,000 third prize for her public-service announcement, "Women Against Domestic Violence."
