New bishop challenges Pittsburgh Catholics to be excited about faith

PITTSBURGH (CNS) -- Bishop David A. Zubik challenged the faithful to be excited about their faith as he took his place as the 12th shepherd of the Diocese of Pittsburgh. More than 2,000 people witnessed his installation during the ancient ceremonial rites Sept. 28 at St. Paul Cathedral in Pittsburgh's Oakland neighborhood. "What an awesome responsibility it is to be the shepherd of such wonderful people," he said as he addressed the diocese for the first time. With his installation, Bishop Zubik filled the episcopal seat that had been vacant since Archbishop Donald W. Wuerl of Washington was installed in June 2006. The votive Mass in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary was chosen by Bishop Zubik because of his belief that Mary's discipleship inspires him in faithful obedience to the will of God and to the pope. Four cardinals and more than two dozen bishops and archbishops attended the installation. Archbishop Pietro Sambi, papal nuncio to the United States, reminded Bishop Zubik that the role of the bishop is to be a "man of prayer" who carries out the challenging mandate of proclaiming the word.
