Published: 2007-05-14
VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- Pope Benedict XVI has named Archbishop Terrence Prendergast of Halifax, Nova Scotia, to be the new archbishop of Ottawa. At the same time, the pope accepted the resignation of Ottawa Archbishop Marcel Gervais, 75, who has served in Ottawa since 1989. He submitted his resignation last September in accordance with canon law, which sets bishops' age of resignation at 75. The announcements were made at the Vatican and in Ottawa May 14. The Archdiocese of Halifax said Archbishop Prendergast's installation in Ottawa would be in July. Archbishop Prendergast, a native of Montreal, was ordained a priest for the Society of Jesus in 1972. On Feb. 22, 1995, he was named auxiliary bishop of Toronto, and in June 1998 he was appointed archbishop of Halifax.
