Ex-Steeler stresses value of education at Catholic school benefit

Published: 2007-05-14

YORK, Pa. (CNS) -- Though his stellar NFL career has undoubtedly made him famous, retired Pittsburgh Steelers running back Jerome Bettis said life's achievements begin with education. A Super Bowl XL champion and current football analyst, Bettis was the keynote speaker for York Catholic High School's annual James Forjan Endowment Fund dinner April 24. At a press conference prior to his appearance at the dinner, "The Bus," as he is known, told members of the media that his message to youths begins and ends with the value of education. "You can do anything and you can become anyone through education. I really believe that," Bettis said. "If you can commit yourself from an educational standpoint, you can go anywhere in the world. "I try to relay that (message) and let kids know that the background for Jerome Bettis -- this football player you are familiar with -- is an educational background," he added.
