Montana Catholic newspaper accepts ads, begins monthly publication

GREAT FALLS, Mont. (CNS) -- After cutting back in 2005 from nine to six issues a year because of costs, The Harvest, the newspaper of the Diocese of Great Falls-Billings, increased to monthly publication beginning in January. Father Jay H. Peterson, editor and diocesan administrator, said a decision to start accepting advertising enabled The Harvest to become a monthly publication. "We decided to carry advertising and increase publication to 12 times a year simultaneously," he said. "We knew that advertisers would be more willing to participate if we reached parishioners' homes more often than six times per year." Father Peterson noted that the diocese "reached a balanced budget last fiscal year, but we wanted to explore a new revenue stream through advertising to help offset the additional expense of publishing." The Harvest is "our principal means of communication at this time, reaching almost 19,000 households in a diocese of 94,000 square miles," he said.
