Franciscan University of Steubenville to add sacred music major

Published: 2007-03-15

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio (CNS) -- The Franciscan University of Steubenville will add a major in sacred music this fall. For the first semester, the program will accept five to seven students, but once the major is fully up and running it will be able to accommodate up to 25 students. There will be separate concentrations for voice and organ. Paul Weber, who holds master's degrees in music and in musical art from Yale University, will be in charge of the organ program. A new full-time faculty member will be hired to head up the voice program. Students must audition before being accepted. Students majoring in sacred music will be required to participate in the Schola Cantorum Franciscana choir for six semesters and take a yearlong course in Gregorian chant.
