TUCSON, Ariz. (CNS) -- Retired Bishop Manuel D. Moreno of Tucson, 75, underwent successful surgery the evening of Nov. 13 at a Phoenix hospital "to relieve pressure in the brain caused by bleeding," according to an update on the bishop posted to the diocesan Web site. It said Bishop Gerald F. Kicanas, current head of the Tucson Diocese, reported that the surgery lasted more than two hours. He said the neurosurgeon told Bishop Moreno's family and friends the cause of the bleeding had not been determined. Bishop Moreno was admitted to St. Joseph Hospital in Tucson Nov. 12 after complaining of a severe headache. Doctors decided to transport him by helicopter that night to Good Samaritan Medical Center in Phoenix for further diagnosis and treatment. The retired bishop, 75, who is suffering from Parkinson's disease and cancer of the prostate, had begun chemotherapy treatment for the cancer several months ago.
