SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (CNS) -- Nearly 1,000 people attended the Oct. 26 ordination of Bishop Paul J. Swain, 63, as the new bishop of Sioux Falls at St. Joseph Cathedral and many more watched the ceremony on television and the Internet. Archbishop Harry J. Flynn of St. Paul-Minneapolis was the main consecrator while Bishop Robert J. Carlson of Saginaw, Mich., former bishop of Sioux Falls, and retired Bishop William H. Bullock of Madison, Wis., were co-consecrators. Archbishop Pietro Sambi, apostolic nuncio to the United States, also participated in the ordination liturgy. A public reception was held for the new bishop following his installation. Bishop Swain succeeds Bishop Carlson, who was appointed to Saginaw Dec. 29, 2004, and installed there in February 2005. During the period Sioux Falls was without a bishop, Bishop Samuel J. Aquila of Fargo, N.D., served as apostolic administrator. Catholics in the diocese who did not get to meet Bishop Swain will have the chance to do so in the next several weeks as the new bishop makes a pilgrimage across the diocese Oct. 29-Dec. 3.
