South Korean church organization builds soy milk plant in North Korea

Published: 2006-10-17

SEOUL, South Korea (CNS) -- A South Korean church organization dedicated to providing humanitarian aid to North Koreans recently built a soy milk production facility in Pyongyang, North Korea. The group, Corea Peace 3000, built the facility in the compound of Changchung Church, the only Catholic church in North Korea. The facility is for soy milk for distribution to elementary school students. Corea Peace 3000, founded in 2003, includes Catholic clergy and laypeople and promotes North-South reconciliation through cultural exchange and economic and medical assistance. Nine members of Corea Peace 3000 attended a ceremony in late September to mark the completion of the facility, reported UCA News, an Asian church news agency based in Thailand. Sacred Heart Father John Park Chang-il, director of the organization, told UCA News Oct. 11 that the milk facility is a "joint business" between his group and the lay (North) Korean Roman Catholic Association.
