St. Louis man named to help oversee Vatican treasury

ST. LOUIS (CNS) -- A St. Louis Catholic layman has been appointed by Pope Benedict XVI to be a member of a Vatican committee that helps oversee the Vatican treasury. On Jan. 1, David Mueckl, 46, will begin a three-year term on the Prefecture for the Economic Affairs of the Holy See. He is the only U.S. layman appointed to the group. This new assignment and his past work for the U.S. bishops and the Vatican have given him a greater awareness and appreciation of the significant behind-the-scenes involvement of laypeople within the church, Mueckl said in an interview with the St. Louis Review, archdiocesan newspaper. "I am enormously gratified to see the input of laypeople, not only on the local level, but the national and international level" of the church, he said. Mueckl is chairman, president and chief executive officer of Stepstone Productions Inc., a national nonprofit video production company based in St. Louis. He also is president of its subsidiary, DIA Productions, which is involved in health care education.
