Pope tells ADL members Catholic-Jewish progress should be expanded

VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- The progress made in Catholic-Jewish relations over the past 40 years should be expanded with a renewed commitment to exploring specifically religious themes together, Pope Benedict XVI told members of the Anti-Defamation League. Three dozen representatives of the U.S.-based Jewish organization met the pope Oct. 12 at the Vatican. Pope Benedict told the delegation the modern world needs religious, political, academic and economic leaders willing to work to improve dialogue between people of different religions and cultures. "To do this effectively requires a deepening of our mutual understanding and a shared dedication to building a society of ever greater justice and peace," he said. "We need to know each other better and, on the strength of that mutual discovery, to build relationships not just of tolerance but of authentic respect," the pope said.
