Church musicians' group asks Catholics what makes them sing in church

Published: 2006-10-12

SILVER SPRING, Md. (CNS) -- The National Association of Pastoral Musicians has started an online survey asking Catholics what prompts them to sing in church. The online survey, available at the organization's Web site, www.npm.org, lists a baker's dozen of possible motivations to sing at Mass -- plus the ubiquitous "other (please specify)." Among the choices given are "something I can sing by heart," "familiar melody," "easy to sing," "enthusiasm of the congregation," "leadership of cantor or director," "contemporary song" and "traditional song." Survey respondents can choose more than one. Votes will be taken through Dec. 31. The results will be available in early 2007 both on the organization's Web site and in its membership journal, Pastoral Music.
