WASHINGTON (CNS) -- The Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate honored a theologian, Father Virgilio P. Elizondo, and the Glenmary Research Center at its annual awards dinner at Georgetown University Oct. 4. Father Elizondo, who has been called the "father of U.S. Latino religious thought," is currently a visiting theology professor and Kellogg Institute fellow at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana. CARA, which is based at Georgetown, presented him with the Cardinal Cushing Medal for the Advancement of Church Research. Boston's Cardinal Richard Cushing was the inspirational force behind the 1964 founding of CARA, an independent nonprofit organization that specializes in research serving the mission and pastoral ministry of the Catholic Church. The Glenmary Research Center, in Nashville, Tenn., received the Rev. Louis J. Luzbetak Award for Exemplary Church Research, named after the Divine Word priest who was CARA's first executive director. The Glenmary Research Center was founded in 1966 by the Glenmary Home Missioners, a society of priests and brothers who serve the spiritual needs of people throughout Appalachia, the South and the Southwest.
