Published: 2006-10-05
WASHINGTON (CNS) -- With retired Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor as its organizer and the chief justice and other members of the high court on the program, a Georgetown University Law Center conference drew some of the nation's top legal minds to consider the state of the judiciary. Over two days, John Roberts, chief justice of the United States, as well as the chief justices of Arizona, California and Indiana, U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales and judiciary observers from Congress, the news media, public policy organizations and academia considered what is affecting the independence of the U.S. judicial system and what to do about it. In opening remarks Sept. 28, O'Connor outlined a range of concerns for how the judiciary functions and how it is perceived by the public.
