Irish diocese sets up stand at national, world plowing competitions

Published: 2006-10-03

DUBLIN, Ireland (CNS) -- The Diocese of Kildare and Leighlin, Ireland, tried a new evangelization strategy by setting up a stand at the national and world plowing competitions. The national contest, held Sept. 27-28, is Ireland's biggest agricultural event. The competition, which is based on how evenly the competitors plow different plots of land, is accompanied by the country's largest agricultural show and fair, which attracts more than 700 exhibitors. Making this year's agricultural events even bigger, the national championships were followed immediately by the world contest, which attracted competitors from more than 30 countries. The events took place in Grangeford, Ireland. Among the farm machinery, animal feed, political parties and other stands was a stand based on the theme "The Diocese of Kildare and Leighlin Reaches Out To You!" Bishop James Moriarty of Kildare and Leighlin said it was the first time an Irish diocese was formally present at the plowing championships.
