
Hein named head of Office for Faith-Based and Community Initiatives

WASHINGTON (CNS) -- Jay F. Hein, founder and president of a national think tank specializing in community-based reforms, has been named director of the White House Office for Faith-Based and Community Initiatives by President George W. Bush. Hein, 41, led the Sagamore Institute for Policy Research, based in Indianapolis, from 2004 to 2006. The White House announcement, which noted that Hein also will have the title deputy assistant to the president, was made in August. In a press release, Bush said Hein has been "a leading voice for compassionate conservatism and a champion of faith- and community-based organizations. Hein, a native of Shawano, Wis., has a bachelor's degree in social science and business from Eureka College in Illinois and did graduate political studies at the University of Illinois. Previously, he served as vice president and CEO of the Foundation for American Renewal in Indianapolis. According to published reports, Hein is an elder at Grace Community Church in Noblesville, Ind., and he and his wife have hosted weekly Bible study groups at their home.
