BURLINGTON, Vt. (CNS) -- More than 140 leaders of men's religious orders celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Conference of Major Superiors of Men at their annual assembly Aug. 2-5 in Burlington. With the Old Testament image of Joseph's coat of many colors as the theme for the jubilee assembly, several speakers reflected on the story of Joseph and its lessons for religious life today. The CMSM is a membership organization of the heads of 275 U.S. religious communities representing more than 20,000 vowed religious priests and brothers. The assembly elected Father Thomas D. Picton, provincial superior of the Redemptorists of the Denver province, as CMSM president-elect. He will succeed Dominican Father Dominic Izzo as president when Father Izzo's term ends next year. Before he became provincial superior, Father Picton was vice provincial of the Redemptorists' New Orleans vice province from 1999 to 2005. Before that he was a pastoral psychotherapist in San Antonio.
