Vocations camp gives young men time for discernment

Published: 2006-07-05

EMMITSBURG, Md. (CNS) -- Having received a great deal of positive feedback from the young men who took part in the Harrisburg, Pa., Diocese's inaugural Quo Vadis Days discernment camp last July, Father Raymond LaVoie expected this year's camp would indeed draw more participants. Still, he was pleasantly surprised by the attendance. A total of 93 young men ages 15 to 25 enrolled this year -- twice the number of participants in 2005. "It's a very powerful experience centered on Our Lord," said Father LaVoie, director of the Diocese of Harrisburg's Office of Vocations. "I think first and foremost they're drawn into his presence in the holy Eucharist." Quo Vadis is Latin for "Where are you going?" According to tradition, Peter, fleeing Rome to avoid execution, asked this of Jesus in a vision, and Jesus responded that he was "going to Rome, to be crucified again." Peter decided to return to the city and accept martyrdom. Held June 25-29 at Mount St. Mary's Seminary in Emmitsburg, in the Baltimore Archdiocese, Quo Vadis Days 2006 gave participants an opportunity to enjoy spiritual and recreational activities with priests and seminarians of the Harrisburg Diocese.
