Bishop Imesch reflects on ministry as head of Joliet Diocese
Published: 2006-06-29
JOLIET, Ill. (CNS) -- A priest of the Detroit Archdiocese who grew up near the Motor City, Bishop Joseph L. Imesch has covered close to 3 million miles motoring from one parish to another to preside over confirmations, parish dedications and priests' anniversaries in the Joliet Diocese. Now retired after more than 26 years as the bishop of Joliet, he never abandoned his allegiance to the Detroit Lions football team but wrapped his heart around the people of the diocese -- farmers, suburbanites, rich and poor -- and became one of them. In an interview with the Catholic Explorer, Joliet diocesan newspaper, Bishop Imesch deflected a question aimed at identifying his many accomplishments. "I think it's more a matter of service," he said. "What kind of minister was I? What kind of model was I? In my own mind, it's been the Good Shepherd. ... As much as I could, I always tried to care for the people and the priests."
