New manual aims to help readers, presiders bring Scripture to life

Published: 2006-06-22

SAN JOSE, Calif. (CNS) -- A new manual titled "Stop Reading and Start Proclaiming!" aims to help readers of Scripture and priests and deacons who proclaim the Gospel bring those passages to life at Mass. The author is Douglas Leal, professional actor and liturgist, who uses his acting background to teach readers how to become better storytellers. The large-format manual covers how to use one's voice and posture to embody the reading. "Stop Reading and Start Proclaiming!" (128 pp., $23.95) was published by San Jose-based Resource Publications, whose Web address is www.resourcepublications.com. Father Wilfred Raymond, national director of Family Theater Productions in Hollywood, Calif., endorsed the book. "How I wish all of us had devoured Douglas Leal's book ... before standing up in the assembly to exercise this important ministry," he said in a news release about the book. "His reflections on proclaiming God's word are simple, practical, wise and pastorally sensitive."
