God is loving communion of Trinity, pope tells pilgrims

VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- God is not a lone, aloof, infinite being, but is a loving communion of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit and extends that love to all people, Pope Benedict XVI said on the feast of the Most Holy Trinity. "In this world, no one can see God, but he himself has made himself known" to people through his love for them, he said before praying the Sunday Angelus with pilgrims gathered in St. Peter's Square June 11. Through the action of the Holy Spirit, "believers can know the intimacy of God himself, discovering that he is not infinite solitude, but communion of light and love, life given and received in an eternal dialogue between the Father and the Son in the Holy Spirit," the pope said from his apartment window at the Vatican. According to St. Augustine, the pope said, love unites three entities: the one who loves, the one who is loved, and love itself that binds all three.
