
New Washington archbishop meets briefly with pope

VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- Archbishop Donald W. Wuerl, who is to be installed as the new archbishop of Washington June 22, met briefly with Pope Benedict XVI May 31. Archbishop Wuerl, who was at the Vatican for a meeting of the Synod of Bishops' council, spoke with the pope at the end of his weekly general audience. The archbishop said the pope offered "nice words of encouragement." He said, "It was a good and really strong experience for me to have those few moments with him and hear his words of encouragement for what is really a big change for me." Archbishop Wuerl has been bishop of Pittsburgh since 1988.
