Ending misery the key to ending poverty, says Cameroon cardinal

WASHINGTON (CNS) -- Eradicating misery is the most important step to ending poverty, said Cardinal Christian Wiyghan Tumi of Douala, Cameroon, moderator of a panel titled "To Make Poverty History: A Challenge for the World," as part of the April 26-27 International Prayer for Peace interfaith gathering at Georgetown University. "To make poverty history is not the thing, but to make misery (history)," Cardinal Tumi said. "In my country, we are not talking about poverty, we are talking about misery. When a parent cannot send a child to primary school because they do not have the money, that parent is miserable. When a child cannot eat a full meal, the family is miserable," Cardinal Tumi said. "God has meant for the wealth of the world to be shared by every human being," he added. "It is not good for some to have so much while others have nothing."
