Denver Catholic paper calls for defeat of child sex abuse bills
Published: 2006-04-20
DENVER (CNS) -- A Denver Catholic Register editorial called for the defeat of two pending Colorado bills that would alter the statute of limitations in child sex abuse cases and make it easier to sue Catholic institutions. The intent behind the two state bills "is to clearly and prejudicially target the Catholic Church," said the editorial, which appeared in the April 19 issue of the weekly newspaper of the Denver Archdiocese. The bills would allow people to file civil suits against the three Colorado dioceses or other Catholic organizations in child sex abuse cases that are prohibited under the current statute of limitations. "Colorado Catholics need to contact their Colorado lawmakers today and urge that these flawed bills be defeated or very deeply amended to eliminate 'retroactive liability' and any hint of unfairness," the editorial said.
