VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- Scientific and technological progress must never come at the cost of the life and dignity of people, Pope Benedict XVI told participants of a Vatican conference on higher education. He said universities and other institutions of higher learning can play a key role in sustaining the ideals and values that uphold and protect humanity while still pursuing scientific advancements. The pope made his remarks in an April 1 meeting with educators and government ministers who took part in a seminar sponsored by the Vatican's Congregation for Catholic Education. The international gathering focused on the cultural heritage and academic values of European universities.
