Gary Catholic high schools set limits on students' cell phone use

Published: 2006-03-10

GARY, Ind. (CNS) -- While cell phones provide instant communication in a busy world, they are also causing a unique set of problems in schools. Students nationwide have been found cheating by using the devices' text-messaging feature. Camera phones have been used to pass along questions and answers. Inappropriate photos of students are also a concern, as are video games. For some, cell phones seem to be a catalyst for bad behavior and disrespect for others. The three Catholic high schools in the Diocese of Gary have addressed these issues and established cell phone policies. At Bishop Noll Institute in Hammond, phones are to be turned off inside the school building and students are strongly encouraged to keep phones in their lockers. At Andrean High School in Merrillville, cell phones are to be turned off by 8 a.m. and not turned back on until the ending bell at 2:45 p.m. If a phone is confiscated, both student and parents must pick it up in the office. At Marquette High School in Michigan City, phones are not to be used during school time, and if found they will be taken away.
