Msgr. Pospishil, expert on Eastern church law, dies at 91

PERTH AMBOY, N.J. (CNS) -- A funeral Mass for Msgr. Victor J. Pospishil, an authority on canon law and the Eastern churches, was celebrated Feb. 24 at the Church of the Assumption in Perth Amboy. Msgr. Pospishil, 91, died of natural causes Feb.16 in the Raritan Bay Medical Center in Old Bridge, according to his niece, Maria Johanna Connolly of Old Bridge. A prolific writer on canon law issues, Msgr. Pospishil was named in 1992 to head the revision committee responsible for adapting the laws of the Ukrainian Catholic Church in the U.S. to conform to the new Code of Canons of the Eastern Churches approved by the Vatican. He was a member of the Canon Law Society of America and in 1995 received its Role of Law Award. He was also a charter member of the Society for the Law of the Eastern Churches.
