
Cardinal-designate O'Malley is fifth Boston archbishop named cardinal

BOSTON (CNS) -- When Cardinal-designate Sean P. O'Malley enters the College of Cardinals March 24, he will be the fifth archbishop of Boston to become a cardinal. The first was Cardinal William Henry O'Connell, Boston's fifth bishop and second archbishop. He was archbishop of Boston from 1907 to 1944 and was made a cardinal in 1911. His successor was Cardinal Richard James Cushing, who led the archdiocese from 1944 to 1970. He was made a cardinal in 1958. Cardinal Humberto Sousa Medeiros was archbishop of Boston from 1970 to 1983 and was made a cardinal in 1973. Cardinal Bernard F. Law, now archpriest of St. Mary Major Basilica in Rome, was archbishop of Boston from 1984 to 2002. He was made a cardinal in 1985.
