World Marriage Day celebrates couples' long-lasting love, commitment

LAWRENCE, Neb. (CNS) -- Five Nebraska siblings and their spouses, each married for more than 50 years, were among the hundreds of Catholic couples around the country who joined in celebrating World Marriage Day Feb. 12. Sponsored by Worldwide Marriage Encounter, the annual celebration began in 1981 in Baton Rouge, La. It honors husbands and wives for "their faithfulness, sacrifice and joy in daily married life." The Hubl siblings certainly can attest to that. Alois and Randi Hubl have been married almost 58 years. John and Rose (Hubl) Janda were to mark their 60th anniversary Feb. 26. Charles and Frances Hubl celebrated 54 years of marriage last year. William and Patricia Hubl have also been married 54 years, and John and Eileen Hubl are approaching 53 years. Among them, the five couples have 27 children, 77 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. All five pairs agree that good Catholic education is one of the major factors in the longevity of their marriages, as well as their faithful dependency on Christ and his mother, Mary, whom the Hubls say have been their companions and guiding light.
