Detroit cardinal renews a lifelong vow -- to root for the Steelers
Published: 2006-02-02
DETROIT (CNS) -- It may not be one of the most common devotions for Catholics, but it's one that Detroit's Cardinal Adam J. Maida has held to most of his life. And, no, it's not a chaplet. It's rooting intensely for the Pittsburgh Steelers. In a lighthearted press conference Jan. 30, at the beginning of Super Bowl week, Cardinal Maida talked about the first 54 years of his life in Pittsburgh and his lifelong loyalty to the Steel City's black-and-gold football team. "You've got the coal mines, you've got the steel mills and you've got the Steelers," said Cardinal Maida, whose father was a coal miner. "It's part of the culture of the people and our community, and that became a part of myself." The Steelers were to play the Seattle Seahawks Feb. 5 in Super Bowl XL at Detroit's Ford Field.
