Argentine mothers' group to stop marches, continue vigils for missing
Published: 2006-02-01
BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (CNS) -- A group of mothers who became emblems of opposition to Argentina's dictatorship in the 1970s and 1980s has decided to discontinue its annual protest marches but will continue to press for information on those who "disappeared." In a message on the Web site of the Association of Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo, founder Hebe de Bonafini referred to a "new wind blowing" from the government of President Nestor Kirchner, whose human rights policy she described as impeccable. The group said its Jan. 25-26 "resistance march" would be its last, but it plans to continue its weekly vigils to pressure for the release of information about children and grandchildren who disappeared during the country's military dictatorship.
