New members named to bishops' National Advisory Council
Published: 2006-01-30
WASHINGTON (CNS) -- The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has announced the names of 16 new members on its National Advisory Council. The council, which can have up to 63 members, is comprised mainly of laypeople but also includes men and women religious, permanent deacons, priests and bishops. It meets twice a year, before the bishops' spring and fall national assemblies, to review and offer recommendations on the documents and other matters that the bishops are to discuss or vote on. Joining the council from the membership of the USCCB Administrative Committee are Bishops Thomas J. Olmsted of Phoenix and David A. Zubik of Green Bay, Wis. The terms of all other council members are four years, but bishops' terms are limited to three years, coinciding with their terms on the Administrative Committee. Deacon Everett Doxtator of DePere, Wis., joins the council in the deacon category, which was added in 2003 by a change in membership rules.
