Vatican announces new archbishop for Lviv, Ukraine

VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- Ukrainian Archbishop Ihor Vozniak, a former auxiliary bishop in the Eastern-rite Archdiocese of Lviv, is now the archbishop of the see, the Vatican announced. In a Dec. 29 statement, the Vatican said Cardinal Lubomyr Husar, head of the Ukrainian Catholic Church, transferred Archbishop Vozniak, 53, to the post with the consent of the Ukrainian bishops' synod. The Archdiocese of Lviv became vacant in August when Cardinal Husar transferred his own see, the major archbishopric of the Ukrainian Catholic Church, from Lviv to Kiev and Halych. According to the Code of Canons of the Eastern Churches, the pope must give his consent to the appointment of new bishops, but the head of an Eastern Catholic Church only needs to inform the Vatican when bishops are transferred or dioceses are modified.
