Catholic school students collect $1 million for hurricane victims
Published: 2005-12-09
WASHINGTON (CNS) -- Children in Catholic schools and religious education programs across the country raised more than $1 million to assist students affected by the Gulf Coast hurricanes. The money was raised through "Child to Child: A Catholic Campaign to Aid Education," sponsored by the National Catholic Educational Association. The campaign collected dollar contributions from students to help children in areas ravaged by the storms and areas impacted by large numbers of evacuee students. A Dec. 7 news release said that by Dec. 2 the contributions totaled $1.04 million from 1,254 schools and religious education programs. Karen Ristau, NCEA president, and Daniel Curtin, executive director of NCEA's department of chief administrators, presented checks from the campaign to New Orleans Archbishop Alfred C. Hughes and superintendents and directors of religious education from several of the dioceses that received the funds during a Dec. 8 ceremony at St. Louis Cathedral in New Orleans.
