New Orleans Catholic colleges gear up for January reopening

Published: 2005-12-05

NEW ORLEANS (CNS) -- Catholic-run Xavier and Loyola universities and Our Lady of Holy Cross College in the Archdiocese of New Orleans are gearing up to reopen in January after being closed for most of their first semester, which started right before Hurricane Katrina hit Aug. 29. At Xavier University, which received significant damage from the hurricane, reconstructing the campus for the start of classes Jan. 17 has been a top priority. Electricity has been restored to the campus' central plant and power is being restored to the library and pharmacy school buildings. The spring semester at Loyola University will begin Jan. 9. The campus experienced only minor damage from the hurricane. The administrative offices are temporarily located in Alexandria, La., and in Houston. Our Lady of Holy Cross College in Algiers will reopen Jan. 7. The campus did not incur much physical damage. But the college needs to have utilities restored before it can resume classes.
