What I Have Seen and Heard - Archbishop Gregory's Weekly Column

Library association promotes healthy reading habits, safe libraries

Published: 2005-10-25

PHILADELPHIA (CNS) -- In the debate over whether patrons of all ages at the nation's libraries should have unhampered access to the Internet or to books parents may find objectionable, the Catholic Library Association leaves the politicking to larger library groups. The only agenda the Catholic organization has, its leaders say, is to provide good books, promote safe libraries and encourage healthy reading habits. The group, they say, is proud to be family-friendly and faithful. The association, based in Pittstown, Mass., provides its 1,000-plus members with scholarships and opportunities for professional development and networking, as well as support and guidance to help them maintain quality libraries in an increasingly complicated field. Its two publications, Catholic Library World and the Catholic Periodical and Literature Index, are another resource for members. "In addition to national membership, we have many chapters in different parts of the country, and people can belong to their local chapter without being national members," Sister Jean noted.
