Published: 2005-10-25

WASHINGTON (CNS) -- The alumni association of The Catholic University of America presented its highest honor, the James Cardinal Gibbons Medal, to former National Football League defensive back and youth charity patron Darrell Green Oct. 14. Green, who retired in 2002 after 20 years with the Washington Redskins, is co-founder with his wife, Jewell, of the Darrell Green Youth Life Foundation. The organization operates eight after-school "youth life learning centers" in Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina and the District of Columbia for children from unstable homes and those who lack academic and/or community support. A seven-time NFL All-Pro, Green recently was selected to chair the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation. He also founded the Darrell Green Business Council for Youth, which brings together business leaders in support of his foundation's service programs.
