WASHINGTON (CNS) -- Special services or programs marked the papally proclaimed Year of the Eucharist in many U.S. dioceses as the year drew to a close in October. Thousands attended a two-day eucharistic congress Oct. 7-8 in the St. Paul-Minneapolis Archdiocese. One of the featured speakers was actor Jim Caviezel, who played Jesus in Mel Gibson's film, "The Passion of the Christ." Catholics from across the Detroit Archdiocese came to the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament Oct. 9 for a daylong celebration. It started with a Mass celebrated by Detroit Cardinal Adam J. Maida and ended with an evening worship service and pizza party for youths and young adults. In Syracuse, N.Y., Knights of Columbus and Knights and Ladies of the Holy Sepulcher turned out in full regalia along with hundreds of other Catholics to fill the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception for solemn vespers and benediction Oct. 16. Pope John Paul II had declared a churchwide Year of the Eucharist beginning in October 2004 and ending in October 2005 with a world Synod of Bishops meeting in Rome to discuss the centrality of the Eucharist in Catholic life.
