Published: 2005-09-27

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (CNS) -- Catholic Charities USA has established a fund to aid victims of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, which landed a ferocious one-two punch on the Gulf Coast nearly a month apart. About 96 percent of contributions made to Catholic Charities' 2005 Hurricane Relief Fund will be used for emergency response and recovery efforts, said an announcement on the agency's Web site. Already Catholic Charities USA has been able to provide $2.2 million in initial funding to help with Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. The money has gone to 30 local Catholic Charities agencies, including those in Gulf Coast dioceses and those in other U.S. dioceses that are assisting evacuees. Catholic Charities USA is the nationwide network for diocesan social service agencies. Donations can be made by phone at: (800) 919-9338. Contributions can also be made via the Catholic Charities' Web site, www.catholiccharitiesusa.org. Checks can also be sent by mail to: Catholic Charities USA, 2005 Hurricane Relief Fund, P.O. Box 25168, Alexandria, VA 22313-9788.
