BALTIMORE (CNS) -- The bells of the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen in Baltimore pealed with joy while inside the organ, trumpets and timpani majestically harkened the 1,200-member congregation to the Aug. 24 ordination of Bishop Denis J. Madden as the Archdiocese of Baltimore's 15th auxiliary bishop and urban vicar. Bishop Madden, who formerly served in the Middle East as assistant general secretary of the Catholic Near East Welfare Association, thanked the hundreds gathered for their "warm welcome and presence at this joyful celebration." "It is an honor, and it is humbling," the new bishop said in comments delivered after Communion. "I will fulfill this office humbly and with great devotion. It is so good to be back in Baltimore," he added. " It is so great to be back among you and work in the vineyard of the Lord. I thank God for the blessings of this day and for each and every one of you." Baltimore Cardinal William H. Keeler, principal consecrator in the centuries-old ceremony of episcopal ordination, said the Holy Spirit was "pouring forth on the Archdiocese of Baltimore."
