CELAM official named to head U.S. bishops' Latin American office

Published: 2005-07-26

WASHINGTON (CNS) -- As a sign of the growing cooperation between the U.S. and Latin American hierarchies, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has for the first time appointed an official of the Latin American bishops' council, known as CELAM, to head one of its offices. Puerto Rican Father Carlos Quintana Puente, CELAM general treasurer, was appointed July 25 as executive director of the U.S. bishops' Secretariat for the Church in Latin America, effective Oct. 1. The appointment was announced in Washington by Msgr. William P. Fay, USCCB general secretary, who said that "Father Quintana is particularly well-suited for this work." CELAM representatives told Catholic News Service in an e-mail that this marked the first time a council official has been picked to head an office of the U.S. bishops.
